Sign making is an industry that is not often explored by many, however, if you’re interested in changing careers or following a creative passion then it could be a viable option for you.

While we aren’t currently hiring, there are many ways to get into sign making – if it is something you’re interested in exploring.

Transferable skills

If you’ve worked in similar industrial areas, such as screen printing, operating large machinery, or spending much of your day up and down ladders, then you have some key experience needed for the sign making industry.

While skills such as screen printing and vinyl wrapping are developed over time and need to be taught, some areas of our work, such as operating the machines, can be taught over time.

Many sign making companies will already have an experienced team who will be willing to support you in the areas you don’t feel as comfortable in.

Apprenticeship

We all start somewhere.

And for many people, an apprenticeship is a great place to start. It allows you to connect with people who are on a similar path to yourself and also gain skills into a unique industry that may seem unattainable to you.

You’ll also be paid for this position – and who doesn’t want that?

Networking

If you’re older and you’re looking to switch careers, then an apprenticeship may not be appealing to you.

In that case, you should redirect your efforts towards networking.

Connect with sign makers in your areas on LinkedIn or call up sign making businesses and introduce yourself.

The worst-case scenario is that they aren’t interested. But the best case may be that you find someone willing to mentor you, you get a tour of a sign making facility, or you gain a job from it.

And if you’re still struggling…

In the case you’re still unsure about which route to take, then you can always find a job that is similar to the industry and offers you experience in some skills that’ll be valuable to making the switch.

Sign making is a valuable industry. It’s creative, innovative, and you’ll be working across all kinds of industries.
